Dog on Vacation: Dog Sitter or Boarding facility?
Dog on Vacation: Who Looks After Your Dog When You’re Away?
The suitcase is packed. The excitement is growing. Only one question won’t fit between your passport and your sunscreen: Where will your dog be while you’re away?
For some dogs, a change of scene is an adventure. For others, stress starts the moment their familiar blanket ends up in an unfamiliar place. That’s why the best vacation care can’t be judged by price alone or by the nicest accommodation. It has to suit the dog’s character.
Dog boarding facility or private dog sitter?
A dog boarding facility (Hundepension) often has established routines, fixed care hours and experience with many dogs. Dogs that enjoy the company of other dogs and take to new surroundings calmly can feel at home there. But size and group makeup vary considerably: a small facility can be quieter than a large one, and a professional facility isn’t automatically impersonal.
With a private dog sitter, your dog may live in an ordinary household. That can allow more individual routines – for example, a walk at his usual times or more rest periods. At the same time, it matters how many animals are there, whether they get along, and how reliably the caregiver handles difficult situations.
A third option is care in your own home (house sitting). It can make sense if your dog is strongly attached to his surroundings, travels badly, or needs particularly attentive medical care. Home visits alone, on the other hand, are enough only if your dog can comfortably spend the time between visits on his own.
The right question isn’t: What’s the most convenient?
Ask instead: How does my dog react to strangers? Can he sleep among other dogs? Does he get restless when his daily routine changes? Does he need medication, a particular food or especially frequent breaks?
A lively young dog and an older, cautious dog can have completely different experiences in the very same care. That’s why general promises like “All dogs feel at home here” say very little. Good care starts with precise questions.
Meeting in person is worth more than the perfect profile description
Get to know the caregiver before the trip if you can. Watch whether your dog is allowed to make contact on his own terms, whether his body language is respected, and whether the caregiver asks about feeding, health, compatibility and emergency contacts. For longer stays, a short trial period can help.
Also agree in writing which services are included, how updates will be sent, and what happens if your dog gets sick or the care falls through unexpectedly. Vaccination and insurance questions should also be settled in advance. For commercial care, such as at a boarding facility, a permit under Section 11 of the German Animal Welfare Act (Tierschutzgesetz) is usually required – feel free to ask about it.
