Cat on Vacation: Cat Sitter at Home or Boarding?
Vacation Without Your Cat: Why a Familiar Place Is Often the Best Trip
A dog sometimes takes his home along, as long as his human is with him. Many cats see it differently: their home is already there. Why would you leave it?
Cats are often strongly attached to their familiar surroundings. The scratching post in the right spot, the smell of the sofa, the paths between food bowl and window – much of it provides a sense of security. That’s exactly why care in their own home can be more comfortable for many cats than a temporary move.
Cat sitter: the world stays as it is
A reliable cat sitter comes to your home and takes care of food, water, the litter box and your cat’s well-being. For shy or older cats this is often an advantage: they don’t have to be transported or get to know new rooms and unfamiliar animals.
However, “staying at home” doesn’t mean a cat can be left alone for days without a problem. Regular visits (at least one visit per day is usually recommended), monitoring of her health and a reachable emergency contact are essential. For sick animals in particular, care has to be planned individually.
Cat boarding: not necessarily worse
A good cat boarding facility offers fixed routines and trained staff. It can be a fit if your cat copes well with change and needs close, on-site care. Look at the rooms and ask about hiding places, hygiene, how unfamiliar cats are handled and veterinary care. Vaccination status often matters too: many facilities require certain vaccinations, so ask about their requirements in advance. For commercial care, a permit under Section 11 of the German Animal Welfare Act (Tierschutzgesetz) is usually required.
What is fine for one cat can unsettle another badly. Open group housing, for example, shouldn’t automatically count as an advantage: cats differ in how sociable they are, and not every cat wants to share her living space with unfamiliar cats.

Don’t just watch whether your cat eats
Stress in cats can show up quietly. Some hide more, groom noticeably little or excessively, eat less well or change their litter box habits. Such signs deserve attention; they can also have medical causes.
Before your vacation, think about what your cat really needs: play or rather quiet? Medication? Particular feeding times? Is she used to strangers? And who may take her to the vet in an emergency?
The good feeling starts before you leave
Meet the caregiver in good time. Explain the routines and let the cat decide whether she wants to make contact. Someone who doesn’t push themselves on her can build more trust than someone who wants to pick up every cat right away.
Not every trip has to become a trip for your cat as well. At HundBunt you can look into cat care in Frankfurt and talk through the right solution at your own pace.
